Old dog jumps the technology fence

It’s never too late to teach an old dog new tricks, especialy when we’re talking real estate. In an industry that is well know for its ability to stifle the uptake of new technology, Stockdale & Leggo, one of the oldest real estate agencies in Australia, has taken up the challenge to integrate new media into its business strategy. Firstly it replaced its 57-year old logo to enhance its appeal to an increasingly younger and technology-savvy real estate market.
They focused on market research that showed they were a trusted company…that was seen as credible and substantial, but still had the air of being old fashioned.
The franchise-based company was already focusing on building its information technology smarts and had plans to intensify its training in social media and online traffic generation.
I love the fact that here is an archaic real estate company who has technology champions in its ranks. These younger, online savvy empoyees are pioneering the change management in the digital frontier. Over the next 12 months most of the training will be focused on ICT (Information Communications Technology), with a strong focus on application development on iPhones and iPads.
Although there is merit in still using the traditional methods of table presentation, there is a case for doing listing presentations on iPads when the vendor is aligned to the technology and sees this as a benefit to doing business with you. For me as a marketer, who makes his living researching new trends in technology and advising clients all over Australia, every new development in how we present information has its place, it’s how we choose to see play our technology cards that determines the outcome. Don’t whip out your iPad when you’re selling a 5 acre hobby farm in Woop Woop, you just may lose the listing.
Stockdale and Leggo are keeping their vendors aware of everything that’s happening with their properties via social media and via smartphones, SMS and email, so they don’t have to wait for the agent to phone. Push technology is the way forward. Keep your customers informed evey step of the sale.
